For the past few decades polo has played an integral role in the advancement of the McFaddin Ranch remuda. Many may believe only pure-bred thoroughbred ponies are suitable prospects for polo since the sport demands a great deal of speed from the animal. While in higher goal games, it is many times true that only the thoroughbred can consistently produce the speed necessary to keep the pace of play, moderate and lower goal players will often benefit from the level-headedness of a half-thoroughbred and half-quarter horse, or appendix bred animal, as it is termed.

McFaddin Ranch maintains two thoroughbred stallions, both of which have proven polo experience in their genetic pedigree.

We currently keep a broodmare inventory of consisting of proven hand-picked mares who have performed exceptionally either on the ranch or on the polo field. Both AQHA, appendix, and pure thoroughbred mares, are included within the herd. This is done in order to produce a selection of horses tailored to fit each individual player’s needs. As we see it, having some diversity in the broodmare band allows us the ability to offer players a horse which possess the needed stamina for polo, as well as the added benefits of agility and intelligence.

The McFaddin advantage in raising polo ponies is that they can be broke and brought up on the ranch working cattle and riding pasture. By doing this the horse becomes sensitized to a myriad of different situations, in turn making it more at ease in a variety of environments. Very few places will you find this type of training when it comes to polo ponies and it shows in both the temperament and performance of the horses produced through our equine program on a yearly basis. Since the 1980s, our aim has been to produce a level-headed agile horse, which wishes to consent to the players requests. Being born and broke on the ranch ensures that these horses are exposed to a variety or situations and working conditions, ensuring both their versatility and usefulness.
